Gardensheads Camp is the perfect introduction to organic
gardening for children. Each camp day
includes YOGA, GARDENING, and ART. Our completely
enclosed backyard and great Camp House provides all the space and comfort
needed for camp. Gardenheads is located
in North Central Austin at 1914 Cullen Ave, 78757.
In 2007 Gardenheads began as a seedling gardening program
for children and has grown into a series of camps throughout the years. It has been wonderfully fun for us and for
every Gardenhead camper that has attended. Simply digging in the dirt, watering and watching their plants grow is
amazingly entertaining to children. The light
in their eyes when they encounter their first worm or see a seedling sprout
from the seed they planted feeds our spirits as well as theirs.
We begin our morning with YOGA featuring My Daddy is a
Pretzel. Our yoga practice includes
yoga poses appropriate for children, campers will also learn the Salutation to
the Sun. When our minds are centered and
our bodies stretched and relaxed we discuss our Expectations of Behavior for
Gardenheads. All Gardenheads are
expected to be: Polite, Honest, Respectful of their own property and that of
others and of the earth and all living things, Responsible for their own
actions and choices, Truthful and to Participate in all lessons and activities.
GARDENING classes educate children about the importance of
plants in our lives, foster an understanding of biodiversity and stress the
necessity of conservation and thoughtful management of the living world. Campers will participate in all phases of our
sustainable gardening practices and learn to plant, tend and harvest
vegetables, herbs and flowers in a natural environment. Campers will learn to fertilize plants,
control pests without the use of chemicals, rainwater collections techniques,
composting, mulching and propagation all in a sustainable manner.
The ART class portion of the day is held in the Camp House
and in the gardens. Campers will study
artists such as Frida Kahlo, Pablo Picasso, and Keith Haring when they were children
themselves. This stimulates our campers
artistic creations. Our art activities
are structured to include plants and objects from nature. Up-cycling is used to promote sustainability
and creativity using found objects. A
wide range of mediums are used and all supplies are included. Campers learn to bring nature indoors as art
and to create art outdoors.
Our goal is to improve your child's understanding of the interrelationships within natural systems by encouraging broad analytical and critical thinking. Garenhead Camps are a fantastic way for kids to improve their knowledge and problem solving skills, all while having a whole lot of fun!
